Case: Mpox infection

Your triage nurse asks you to have a look at a rash. A 35-year-old male has presented with a 3-day history of fever, lethargy and myalgias. The rash started on his face and has now spread to his trunk, palms and soles. You are concerned this might be a Monkeypox infection.

1. State (2) clinical or epidemiological risk factors would you seek on screening history that would lend weight to your suspicions. 2 marks

2. Give (4) important INFECTIOUS differentials for the above rash and state a distinguishing clinical feature for each condition. 4 marks

3. Outline (3) important aspects of managing this patient you strongly suspect of having Monkeypox. 3 marks

You explain the likely diagnosis to your patient. He says that his partner is returning from a 2-week interstate work trip tomorrow and he is concerned about spreading the infection to them.
